Job Description
Main Purpose of the Job
The Archivist and Collections Engagement Curator is responsible for maintaining and promoting the “John Innes Collections”, an extensive set of records, artefacts and books which preserve and display historically significant material from the history of the study of genetics, plant science and microbiology, documenting over 500 years of botanical literature housed at the John Innes Centre in Norwich.
The JI Collections are comprised of the John Innes Archives (the definitive collection of over 300 years of history relating to the Innes Family, plus Institute and scientific records from 1910 to the present day), and the Special Collections, including the JIF Rare Books (a valuable collection of books dating back to 1511), the History of Genetics Library and the annotated libraries of William Bateson and Cyril Darlington.
As a qualified archivist, the post holder will manage the collections, and lead projects, programmes and activities to enable engagement with and use of the collections by internal and external users. You will also be confident in developing and delivering collaborative engagement and outreach activities related to historic collections and ideally have a keen interest in the history of science.
We are looking for someone with the skills and knowledge to proactively manage and develop the Collections, including the introduction of born-digital records relating to the organisation history and ‘life at JIC’ into the archive. This will require new systems to be set up and integrated with teams across the institute and externally to ensure that the Collections are accessible to the public.
The post holder will primarily work independently but is embedded in the John Innes Centre’s Communications and Engagement team who will work collaboratively to deliver events and engagement activities. The post holder will have close links to the Norwich Bioscience Institutes Library team. The role will include processing new accessions, managing and updating a digital catalogue and managing existing collections.
The Archive Curator and Outreach Co-ordinator will share insights from the collection with the world and encourage others to access and use them. We envisage that this role will require significant on-site working in Norwich, with options for some hybrid working.
