Job Description

Main Purpose of the Job

Our digital presence is one of the most important vehicles for communicating about the John Innes Centre and our work to the outside world. The main purpose of this role is to deliver a programme of engaging digital content to effectively support the needs of the John Innes Centre and our internal and external audiences.

The role is responsible for using a range of digital channels including websites, social media, newsletters and internal platforms to promote key organisational messages which reflect the John Innes Centre’s work, brand, key messages and priorities to our target audiences in line with the John Innes Centre’s Engagement Strategy.

The post holder will source and develop digital content that inspires and engages key audiences including the funders of our research and industry collaborators and is marketed effectively to attract new audiences to learn about our research.

The post holder will work closely with internal and external partners to produce and source digital content which is engaging and optimised for accessibility and search engines.

Key Relationships

Internal: Staff and students from across the JIC (from senior scientists, post doctoral scientist, research assistants, technicians) the Director, the Head of Communications and Engagement
External: Funders and collaborators including BBSRC, UKRI, John Innes Foundation, UEA, Norwich Research Park, other educational bodies and scientific institutions, and the public

Main Activities & Responsibilities

Maintain and develop JIC's website
• To communicate the work of JIC using a range of digital channels including websites, social media and email marketing.
• To update and maintain the John Innes Centre’s website as well as two microsites - HP3 and CEPAMS - ensuring they showcase the organisation’s research, impact, culture and reputation.
• To source, update, plan and deliver JIC's online content – drafting, uploading and promoting content including blogs, internal news, case studies, social media campaigns, events pages, job adverts and profile pages to maintain and enhance the institutes reputation.
• To work with our external web developers to develop new functionality as required.
Manage social media
• Manage, evolve and grow social media channels – including Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and YouTube and to respond to enquiries via these channels.
• To build and maintain engagement via social media channels to facilitate a wide range of organisational functions – including highlighting key organisational news, events and campaigns, supporting recruitment, inspiring the next generation and answering questions.
Maintain and populate internal communications platforms
• To provide clear internal communications over a range of internal channels by managing the JIC’s internal news channels: including an internal news site and monthly internal newsletter.
• To keep in close touch with developments across John Innes Centre and propose, write and source engaging digital content for internal audiences which support the needs of staff and students.
• To liaise closely with functions including HR, Contracts, Computing and the Directorate to deliver internal initiatives campaigns to raise awareness of key internal policies, events or initiatives.
Analysis and reporting
• To produce monthly reports on website, internal comms platforms and social media performance to monitor and evaluate the impact of our work to ensure that our activities are meeting our aims and objectives.
Branding and compliance
• To ensure messages delivered through digital media channels are in line with the John Innes Centre’s strategies, brands and values.
• To ensure the John Innes Centre’s digital presence remains GDPR and accessibility compliant.
As agreed with the line manager, any other duties commensurate with the nature of the post

You will have the ability to process complex information and present targeted messages to different audiences.
