Job Description

Main Purpose of the Job

The Postdoctoral Researcher will investigate the spatial expression of transport and regulatory genes involved in micronutrient distribution in developing wheat grains. The post holder will design, optimise and carry out spatial transcriptomics in developing wheat grains to characterise gene expression at the tissue- and cellular- level. Protocol development for spatial transcriptomics will be carried out in collaboration with colleagues at JIC and EI. The post holder will integrate transcriptomic data with phenotypic and genotypic data, primarily focussing on iron and zinc. This project will enable the identification of candidate genes for functional characterisation and ultimately crop improvement.

Key Relationships

Internal: The post holder will be line managed by the Group Leader, Philippa Borrill. The post holder will maintain good relationships with all group members including postdocs, students and visitors. They will also interact with other researchers, research support staff and students across the Institute. They will interact closely with experts in the bioimaging facility for sample preparation and collaborators across the Norwich Research Park to develop spatial transcriptomics protocols for wheat.
External: Academic and industrial collaborators.

The Department of Crop Genetics undertakes fundamental research on the biology of cereals, brassicas and legumes to understand the genetic and molecular basis of phenotypic variation. A major goal is to develop the technologies and knowledge base to provide a predictive framework that will underpin conventional and novel plant breeding strategies. This will enable high-yielding, stress and disease resistant varieties, with a particular end-use quality, suitable for an efficient but benign agriculture.

They will integrate transcriptomic data with phenotypic and genotypic data to identify candidate genes for functional characterisation. 

The ideal candidate:

Candidates should have a PhD in Genetics, Genomics, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Plant Biology, or related discipline and have demonstrated expertise in molecular/cell biology and genomics. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required, alongside the ability to work both independently and effectively within a team.
