Main Purpose of the Job
The Knowledge Exchange and Commercialisation (KEC) Department has two main functions: Knowledge Exchange and Commercialisation.
Knowledge Exchange includes the processes, mechanisms, networks, and relationships that enable knowledge derived from research activity to move between organisations. The term is applied to the sharing of knowledge that has potential impact on innovation, and to change, transform, enhance, or generate new or improved professional practices, policies, technologies, products, services, and public perceptions.
Commercialisation (which in some contexts is referred to as Technology Transfer) describes the process by which the outcomes of research activity are brought to the marketplace through the development of new products, processes, services, or technologies. There will be commercial return involved in the process relating to the potential value of the assets. The process involves the identification of research which has potential commercial interest and the designing of strategies for how to exploit this research. This will include the protecting and managing of the rights to intellectual property. Strategies can include the creation of licensing agreements or joint ventures, partnerships, or spin-out companies.
This new role has been established to support KEC management, gather intelligence on and report on the impact of JIC research and affiliated organisations. As the Knowledge Exchange and Impact (KEI) Officer you will be required to support the delivery of JIC’s KEC strategy by supporting the Institute’s knowledge exchange activities, by collecting and recording KEC activity and impact data, gathering and analysing data on JIC commercial activity, for presentation at board and committee meetings, encouraging professional development of JIC scientists, and providing effective and efficient support to KEC projects. You will liaise directly with JIC scientists to identify and capture scientific advances.
An understanding of our science and a keen interest in technology are essential to this role. The ability to initiate and nurture close relationships with researchers, academic leaders and administrators is essential. This role will be suitable for a recently qualified PhD student or Postdoctoral Researcher. Training will be provided including access to external courses.
Internal: Reporting to the Head of Business Development and Head of Commercialisation, the KEI Officer will be a member of the KEC Department and will work closely with all JIC academic staff as well as the Norwich Biosciences Institutes’ Contracts and Finance Departments.
External: Funding agencies, e.g. BBSRC, the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills affiliated organisations part owned by JIC, and charitable organisations;
Enterprise and Business Development champions on Norwich Research Park and other KEC Networks.
Representatives from local and national business organisations.

Main Activities & Responsibilities
- Work with the Head of Business Development and Head of Commercialisation to deliver the KEC strategy.
- Support the Head of Commercialisation in the translation of JIC science into new areas of commercial interest and in the management of IP. Including (but not limited to):
• by performing market research,
• identification of new commercial partners and potential stakeholders,
• help with the writing of business cases for potential investors,
• evaluating the patent landscape for prior art.
- Support the Head of Business Development in the evaluation and promotion of the impact of JIC research as well as in the identification of potential areas of innovation. Including (but not limited to):
• Working closely with academic staff to help identify, plan for, generate and evidence research impact, and prepare case studies for BBSRC and ResearchFish submission, as well as other dissemination and engagement activities.
• Providing a support, guidance, and advice service for all JIC staff across all KEC activities, including the development of tools and resources, through grant applications to ResearchFish reporting, policies on commercialisation including management of intellectual property.
• Identifying new ways of evaluating impact and implementing it within KEC strategy.
• Identification of new collaborators or commercial partners for JIC research outputs.
• Evaluating JIC research outputs to identify potential areas of disruptive innovation.
- Advise, identify and collate suitable metrics for monitoring the KEC strategy and external benchmarking.
- Act as the point of contact for the control of data required for KEC reporting from and for external parties, including analysis and presentation of data.
- Management and administration of commercialisation databases, and data from subsidiaries, providing reporting outputs.
- Liaise with NBI support services to ensure the maintenance and accuracy of databases and management of JIC information systems and ensure KEC led activities are integrated into the NBIROS software system.
- Coordinate events and help in the generation of materials to promote knowledge transfer with industrial partners, to promote research impact, and to share best practice with other KEC teams.
- Work with the Communications and Engagement Department to assist with the communication and dissemination of knowledge-exchange successes through the media.
- Assist in the preparation of board and committee materials.

Education & Qualifications
- Educated to degree level
- Postgraduate qualification
- Degree in the biological or life (especially plant or microbial) sciences
Specialist Knowledge & Skills
- Understanding of JIC science and a keen interest in technology
- Ability to demonstrate proficient use of Microsoft Office and database packages
- Knowledge of plant science and perspective on growth in this area
- Up-to-date knowledge of the research/ knowledge exchange funding landscape and UK funding opportunities for scientific research translated into KEC activities
- Understanding of commercial mechanisms
- Basic understanding of IP issues
- Knowledge of finance, including interpretation and presentation of financial data
- Project management knowledge and skills with the ability to prioritise workload and meet deadlines successfully
- Experience of the impact agenda in the research institute or higher education sector
- Experience of working within a research institute or higher education institute in a Knowledge Exchange role
- Experience of external funded projects
- Any relevant industry experiences
- Experience of working in and/or undertaking research or supporting research/knowledge exchange activities
- Demonstrable recent project management experience

The KEC Team has two main functions: Knowledge Exchange (KE) and Commercialisation (C). Within Knowledge Exchange, we commit to sharing knowledge that has potential impact on innovation. This can include facilitating change and transformation, as well as enhancing or generating new or improved professional practices, policies, technologies, products, services, and public perceptions.
Commercialisation includes translation for both societal and commercial benefit. It includes commercialisation of intellectual property rights (IPR) including patents, corporate partnerships, spinouts, consultancy, and service offerings through JIC’s technology platforms. We work with external patent and commercial legal counsel as well as NBI Contracts (for corporate partnerships including grant support).
