Advert Text The John Innes Centre and The Sainsbury Laboratory are ranked as the world's strongest research organisations in the animal or plant sciences, as measured by the impact of their research outputs. Some of the world's very best scientists come together in Norwich to undertake ground-breaking and world-changing research in plant and microbial sciences.

Applications are sought for a Communications Officer – Digital Specialist for these two co-located institutes.

The Digital Specialist will plan and deliver the institutes’ online content, providing expert guidance on the latest digital communications and enhancing the institutes’ reputations as innovative, forward-thinking and world-leading scientific organisations. An important objective will be to generate digital content that inspires and engages new audiences including potential funders of our research and future industrial collaborators. The successful applicant will possess exceptional communication skills and an ability to process complex information and present targeted messages to different audiences. They will also have a strong track record in creative digital content production and website management and design.

Main Activities & ResponsibilitiesPercentage
The post holder will work closely with colleagues in the C&E team to effectively develop and communicate key messages and news through digital communications channels. The post holder will also be responsible for ensuring messages delivered through digital media channels are in line with the institutes' strategies, brands and values.10
Act as the champion and main point of contact on digital media within the institutes10
Ensure the content of website and social media channels are updated appropriately, ensuring information is current and presented using the latest tools10
Develop digital content that inspires and engages new audiences including new funders of our research and industry collaborators5
Ensure all digital content is optimised to maximise reach and marketed effectively (where necessary) to attract new audiences to learn about our research5
Gather data on institutes' digital reach across websites and social media, experiment and assess value of different digital channels and social media in enabling institutes to engage with their target audiences5
Working with website developers to assess, maintain and update design and functionality of institute websites so that they enable a high-quality audience engagement with institutes' research5
Lead generation and exploration of ideas for future development of digital content, platforms and functionality5
Manage positive and productive relationships with external digital content producers, ensuring delivery of value for money, timely and engaging content that engages target audiences to deliver institutes' strategic objectives5
Monitor and evaluate website and social media activities and report on peer, partner and stakeholder activities as necessary5
Develop a JIC alumni network on LinkedIn5
Contribute and upload content for use on internal digital channels5
Work closely with colleagues in the C&E team using project management tools and techniques to deliver the communications and engagement strategies of both institutes.5
Develop and maintain effective and supportive relationships with scientists and help them to harness digital communication to increase impact and future funding of their research5
Provide guidance on digital opportunities and deliver web and social media plans for science projects and programmes5
Ensure messages delivered through digital channels are in line with the institutes' strategies, brands and values.5
Where necessary, manage the work of interns and support staff working on digital projects within Communications and Engagement team.5
